What information should I have available in order to get a quote from AIA?
It depends on the type of policy you’re looking for – Property coverage is based on construction and value of the property insured, General Liability is based on either payroll or sales, Automobile is based on the vehicle(s) description and cost, Workers Compensation is based on payroll. If you’ve had previous coverage, ask your agent for hard copy (printed) loss runs that will show your claim experience. We’ll also ask you general questions to try to get a good picture of the work you do.
What kind of policy do I need?
If you have a business, you’ll probably need coverage for the property that the business owns, liability for its operations and premises, and automobile insurance if the business owns any vehicles. In addition, you might need coverage for equipment as well as crime coverage to protect against theft by employees. If you have employees, it’s a good idea to cover them with Workers Compensation. Excess/umbrella coverage is available if you need higher liability limits than your base (primary) policy offers. If your business is consulting or giving advice, you probably want to look at some professional liability covering you for the advice you give. If competition for good employees is hot in your area, you might offer some employee benefits, such as health, dental, or life insurance, or AFLAC or other supplemental benefits.
How long does it take to get a quote?
It depends on the type of coverage you’re looking for and what kind of business you have. For instance, a Workers Compensation underwriter will more than likely have more questions about the operations of a general contractor than a dentist’s office, and underwriters like to have all their questions answered before offering a quote. For a very simple policy, you’re probably looking at a few days; for a large risk where inspections are needed, you’re probably looking at a few weeks.
